White House slams Trump's plan to ban Muslims
WASHINGTON: Senior officials from the White House aligns Monday to condemn Donald Trump's
proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States, saying it was contrary to the values and
interests of the United States.
"You're being generous describing it as a proposal," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest,
punishing latest outburst Republican primary presidential candidate of fire as "cynical".
"I think what Mr. Trump is doing is something he has been doing throughout his campaign, which is playing on the fears of people in order to build support for his campaign."
"I think what you are doing, that is dividing America in a very cynical way," Earnest said MSNBC.
A team statement Trump previous campaign provoked a political storm by suggesting to stop Muslims from entering the country "until the representatives of our country can find out what's going on."
The comments come following a mass shooting that saw a married couple killed 14 people and were denounced by many in his own party.
"It is totally incompatible with the kinds of values that were essential to the founding of this country," Earnest said.
One of the main foreign policy advisers to President Barack Obama, Ben Rhodes, told CNN that the plan was also "contrary to our security."
"The fact of the matter is that (the State Islamic militant group) want to frame this as a war between America and Islam," he added.
"And if we seem to apply religious tests who enters this country, we are sending a message that in essence we are embracing that."
Rhodes said the relocation plan, if acted upon, could also call into question the ability of the US to work with Muslim communities to counter radicalization.
